Week 5 Run 2

Completed this run today after work at the gym. Nicely, it wasn't too full tonight (I was maybe 10 mins later than "normal" because of trying to go via the bike shop to pick up the Cannondale), so I didn't feel the normal guilt of being the longest person on a treadmill when people were waiting ("Please limit your use to 15 mins when busy")

So tonight's run was 2x8 mins, with a 5 min walk in between.
I feel I just about managed it, although the prospect of 20 mins non-stop next time is rather freaking me out.
It is apparently a Mental Thing.

Week 5 run 1

After a couple of weeks off running, I went back to the gym on Sunday and repeated Week 4 run. It felt OK.

Today I had a go at Week 5 run 1. This is 5 mins running, 3 walking, 5 running, 3 walking, 5 running (i.e. 15 mins running in total). Slightly less than last time, but all longer.

There is only 1 of this run, the next one (Thursday, probably) is 8 mins running x 2. And then after that (when, I'm not sure, as I'm away for the weekend...) is 20 mins solid running (minor eek!)

I felt today that 3 x 5 might be too much (on top of commuting), but it's a mental thing - I managed it. While I was running, I actually was thinking to myself, "if I had to keep going for another 3 mins, I could make myself do it" - and perhaps the same will be true of 20 mins non-stop. Of course the aches and pains might take over on that one; we shall see...

Livia Doesn't Run

Haven't run since last Thursday, as I got hit by a cold last Friday lunchtime, and walking was a struggle, let alone running.

I think I will re-do the final run of week 4 when I feel better (breathe, breathe) and then have a go at week 5, whenever that is.

A week into the cold, and I'm still feeling choked with it. :(

Week 4 run 3 - gym

Completed week 4. I looked at the distance I travelled today, and added it up that it was about 350m for each of the two 3 min runs, and 600m for the 5 min runs = total about 1900m.

Total distance travelled about 3.2k in 34 mins, including the walking bits.

Next week looks scary though... up to 20 mins running by this time next week? (I'll be in Glasgow that day...)

Week 2 Run 2 - gym

Completed this too, despite a short wait for a treadmill to become available (5.45pm is busy time at the gym...)

I confess that I started the session with "I probably won't manage this today" in my head. It's after work, I've cycled (and it's been on the mountain bike so knobbly tires = harder work) and I was remembering that last week on run 2 I hadn't had a day's work (YBS day off). So I felt some doubts that I would manage it.

Anyway - I did manage to see it through to the end, and completed all 16 mins of running. And yes, in my head I'm doubting that next week I'll manage 3x5mins, or 2x8mins, or 1x20mins... (especially as I'm not sure what I'll manage when staying with Katie on the Tuesday run day).

Week 4 Run 1 - gym

This week the regimen is:
5 mins warm up walk
3 mins run
90s walk
5 mins run
2.5 mins walk
3 mins run
90s walk
5 mins run
5 mins warm down walk

Which according to my calculation makes 16 mins running and 15.5mins walking - over 50% for the first time!

I had a sore heel early on (in the first 3 min run actually) but it seemed to get better over the duration of the run. Interesting...

I managed to do all the running without faltering. I appreciate the positive language Laura uses (she always assumes that you finished the running sections, and didn't give up) and the gradual progressions do make it all possible. This time next week it's 3 x 5 min runs though, and that goes up to 1x20 by the end of the week. Big eek!

I have also been reading the NHS Forum about the programme too, and draw strength from the fact that many other people seem to be overweight, not fit, not confident, but get through it.
Of course, the ones who drop out are maybe less likely to be posting on a forum about it...

Week 3 Runs 2 & 3

Forgot to blog about the 2nd run separately!

Run 2 was on Tuesday, but not after work as usual; instead it was after only a trip up to town to see the YBS chap, and then a descent back to Leith Cycle Co to drop Trek off for gear stuff, and then a walk from there to the gym. It was noticeable that the running was less hard work than the times that I've been there after a cycle commute.

Like on Thursday - This run felt tougher than the last ones. Perhaps (probably) because of the commuting effort, but the 3 min runs really seemed to stretch out and my feet had cramp. Argh.

Anyway, completed everything successfully so On To Week 4!
